Blastoise had some interesting challenges from the jump. The concept art was extremely appealing however it was lacking functionality. The shell was an entire tank head as you can see in the key ref image. This looks great in a still image but forethought is huge for production models. I knew it would not work the way a tank head would. Rotating 360 or even at 180 wouldn't hold up visually. The shell would have exposed areas when the tank head moved to extreme angles. What would be under there? we could fix that with geo but it would be a Band-Aid solution. So I worked in my own design and consulted with the artist. I decided to make clearly artificial panels on the shell to house the main cannon and then give it the ability to deploy when needed. It wound up staying true to the concept at its best and allowed for functionality in 3D from all angles.
